MORCA recently delivered our Laguna Seca Bike Park Overview to Friends of Laguna Seca (FOLS), the concessionaire hired by County of Monterey to manage and operate Laguna Seca Recreation Area for the next 55 years. If the Laguna Seca Bike Park vision is going to move forward, earning the support of FOLS and getting bikes into their Laguna Seca Facilities Master Plan is a crucial first step.

We remain optimistic; on behalf of our MTB community MORCA has delivered a turnkey opportunity for FLS to accomplish stated goals for the recreation side of Laguna Seca. You can learn more about FOLS and its goals on their website. The overview was well received and now undergoing review by FOLS Board of Directors. We expect to hear back sometime in September.

We’re still early on in a long process but sharing MORCA’s vision for a world-class bike park is an exciting milestone and one that wouldn’t be possible without such strong support from our MTB community – thank you! The bike park petition is creeping closer to 1,000 signatures so if you haven’t signed it yet, please do and please share it far and wide.

You can view the Laguna Seca Bike Park Overview that MORCA submitted to FOLS under the “Resources” section of our Bike Park Initiative web page. Keep in mind this is a preliminary step and a very rough sketch… but an exciting vision with LOTS of options and potential! Let’s hope FOLS sees this potential and leans in. From where we are sitting, FOLS and the County of Monterey can’t afford to miss this incredible opportunity.

Next steps:

If FOLS commits to including bikes in their facilities master plan, MORCA will quickly shift gears to seeking development grant opportunities like IMBA’s Trail Accelerator Grant to undergo a proper site assessment and develop formal plans with guidance from bike park and trail builders. Around this time, there will be more opportunities for our MTB community to weigh in on the proposed design, contribute to generating more local support, and start building a coalition of community partners and potential sponsors.
