Miles of Smiles at Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day

Each Fall, our greater MORCA community observes national Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day, celebrating the intersection of youth and all-things mountain biking. There’s a lot to celebrate!

Thanks to this annual nationwide event, to MORCA sponsors, and to local partners like the Community Bike Collective and Fort Friends, dozens and dozens of kids were introduced to mountain biking at Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day. When community organizations provide bikes and helmets for kids who don’t have them, the kids will come – and come they did!

Building confidence and independence as well as instilling healthy habits are just a few of the benefits bestowed upon children who ride bikes. And the proof could not have been more evident at the event, we had miles and miles of smiles all day long!

Once again, volunteers from MORCA and other regional MTB advocacy groups were onsite at the crack of dawn to construct obstacle courses that challenged all ability levels. First-time riders got to experience the fun and adventure that mountain biking always delivers, no matter the size of your bike or your ride. Older kids and adults provided words of encouragement and cheered riders on from the sidelines. Intermediate riders and advanced riders lapped the adventure zone and joined in on guided group rides thanks to our next generation of riders and racers from Salinas area high school mountain bike teams.

This event comes and goes each Fall but the exhilaration always lingers. When our community gets together for kids and a good time is had by all, it is hard not to leave the event dreaming big about more opportunities to get kids on bikes and continue making Monterey mountain biking more inclusive to all.
