On February 12, the much-anticipated Parks & Rec Commission meeting revealed the final design concept and vision for the Old Capitol Site, a new park space that City of Monterey aims to develop. Unfortunately, the commission voted against MORCA’s proposal and the opportunity to integrate mountain bike trails into the plan. For the foreseeable future, bikes will remain prohibited on every dirt road and trail in City of Monterey Parks. Every. Single. One.
Ultimately, concerns over environmental impact, costs, lack of parking, and lack of support by adjacent neighbors were cited as some of the top reasons the site lacked suitability for bike trails. MORCA remains firm in our assessment that building the proposed hiking trails and elevated ADA boardwalk would likely result in the same or greater environmental impacts and costs than mountain bike trails, and we’re disappointed that the city’s legacy discrimination against mountain bikes will continue unimpeded.
Disheartening as this outcome may be, we greatly appreciate everyone in our MTB community who supported the cause by attending meetings, taking surveys, or submitting public comments. No matter the outcome, it was an opportunity to rally around a cause and we are stronger for it.
As promised, MORCA has already pivoted to different locations and partners for the development of purpose-built MTB trails and a dedicated bike park suitable for all ages and ability levels. Our community spoke loudly and clearly, and we are committed to continuing the bike park initiative on your behalf. Stay tuned for updates.
