When you ride or hike trails on the Fort Ord National Monument and adjacent County trails, you can probably tell the difference between trails that MORCA has worked on, and those that haven’t been maintained for some time. As long-standing partners in stewarding these trails, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) values MORCA’s contributions and looks for ways to stimulate our collaborative efforts.
Through a BLM grant MORCA received to assist with trail hardening and addressing problem trails to reduce user conflict, MORCA will now be able to compensate three part-time trail crew workers performing tasks related to this grant. This new opportunity represents an exciting development within our long-standing partnership with BLM. It also speaks to the growth of MORCA’s trail work capabilities and to the positive impacts MORCA delivers to our greater Monterey community. Creating new part-time jobs demonstrates yet another way that mountain biking contributes to our regional economy.
These new positions require a commitment of 3 days per week with approximately 6 hours of work per day from mid-September to mid-November. Outside of this focused trail work initiative, MORCA still depends heavily on volunteer trail workers to keep up with regular trail maintenance and improvements in greater Fort Ord and parts of Monterey County.
Through this grant initiative, we’ll be repairing sections of two popular trails. MORCA is recruiting three trail crew members for this project as follows:
- This is a part-time position starting in mid-September and ending no later than mid-November.
- We’re forecasting a 3-day work week of about 6 hour per day. MORCA will provide all necessary tools.
- Some knowledge of trail maintenance and building is a plus but we’ll provide the necessary training for anyone who needs it.
- Candidates will be working with hand tools and some light machinery like plate compactors and rototillers.
- Compensation starts at $22.50/hr.
If you can’t commit to all the time required for the project, you can still volunteer; we’ll be using some volunteers on this project as well.
